With Transat’s exclusive adult’s only Barceló Bavaro Beach

Being 1st has its advantages.

It was 1985 when Barceló set its sights on Punta Cana’s Bavaro Beach, recognized by UNESCO as 1 of the top 10 beaches in the world. Barceló chose a privileged location on the golden strand, where the day-glo blue water is calmed by a protective reef and the sands are studded with palm trees.

“We are first on the strip, just a 15-minute drive from the airport and with no development on 1 side,” says Rick McCauley, Director, Sales & Marketing for Barceló Hotels & Resorts in Canada.

“The water is never rough and the palm trees provide natural beach shade. The rooms and suites are no more than 150 metres from the beach. It truly is a spectacular location.”

More than 2,000 rooms divided between the adults-only Barceló Bavaro Beach and the family-oriented Barceló Bavaro Palace Deluxe. A $350 million renovation (yes, you read that right) a few years ago took the property to a new level of excellence, as evidenced by a 4.5 rating on TripAdvisor, which also awarded the property a 2014 Travellers’ Choice Award.

Transat Holidays has a Canadian exclusive at the 589-room Barceló Bavaro Beach and McCauley says the exclusive arrangement is a win-win-win for Barceló, Transat and agents.

“One of the big advantages for us is that operators really tend to focus on exclusive product. Transat has a large block at Barceló Bavaro Beach and they really push the product.”

When operators are competing to sell the same resort, it’s easy for the battle to be fought on price, McCauley says. “One drops $20, the other drops $30, and it just goes from there. Transat has a good name and knows how to sell the upscale adults-only product offered at Barceló Bavaro Beach. We like doing exclusives with them.”

McCauley characterizes Barceló Bavaro Beach as a “laid-back” adults-only experience. “There’s an animation team and plenty of activities on offer, but there are also a lot of quiet areas. You won’t see groups of spring break students. For those without kids, they have their own little oasis.”

Guests at the Bavaro Beach can use all of the facilities at the Beach Palace Deluxe, and between the 2 resorts, there’s an embarrassment of activity riches. Many of them are concentrated in the ‘entertainment district’ that features shopping, a casino, a spa, buffet and a la carte restaurants and a 24-hour sports bar.

For more active pursuits, there’s:

  • a gym area with spinning and aerobics
  • 7 tennis courts
  • 2 sports centres for soccer, handball, basketball and volleyball
  • a professional football pitch and a semi-pro baseball diamond
  • all kinds of watersports, some included and some at an extra fee
  • an 18 hole golf course

For golf lovers, the 18-hole The Lakes Barceló Golf Course was redesigned in 2010 by renowned course architect P.B. Dye. Transat guests at the Bavaro Beach and Bavaro Palace Deluxe get three included guaranteed rounds per week in high season, unlimited golf at other times.

Transat guests at either property also receive resort credit discount coupons that McCauley says offer savings “on everything and everywhere at the resort,” with a value of up to $3,000 on stays of 12 days or longer.

McCauley says the “lovely cold weather” in many parts of Canada is helping to deliver a good winter season for the Barceló Bavaro property.

“Punta Cana is doing very well. February and March are looking good and we have lots of groups on the books for summer,” McCauley says.

If there is 1 thing he could change about Canadian travellers, it would be the last-minute booking mentality that the industry is trying very hard to get away from, with aggressive early booking offers.

“The people now looking for February and March aren’t finding much space, so we urge agents to educate their clients that last-minute doesn’t always mean the best deal, especially if they’re looking for a high-quality product like Barceló Bavaro Beach.”
