If Fun Means A Great Time At A Great Price

Occidental & Allegro pack up the value

The acquisition of the Occidental, Allegro and Royal Hideaway brands by Barceló Hotel Group in 2015 spurred the Spanish hotelier to embark on a multi-brand strategy covering a broad spectrum of the market from upper midscale to luxury. In this story we take a look at the Allegro (upper midscale) and Occidental (upscale) brands.

For Transat, Barceló’s #1 tour operator in the Canadian market, some of the Allegro and Occidental properties are perennial top-sellers, delivering great vacation value at an affordable price. You’ll find several Occidental and Allegro resorts in Transat’s Sun Savvy, Famili and Solo Collections.

Allegro – Happy Soul Hotels

Barceló describes the Allegro experience as “delivering fun and freedom to savvy, budget-minded travellers.” As well as 2 properties in Spain, there are 2 Allegro resorts in Mexico that are popular in the Canadian market.

Allegro Playacar is a Transat-exclusive resort located on the white sands of the Riviera Maya. It features 268 rooms in 2-storey villa buildings and is part of the Transat Sun Savvy Collection of fun, affordable, family-friendly resorts.

Allegro Cozumel

Allegro Cozumel is located on the beautiful island off the Yucatan coast. It features 305 rooms in 42 bungalow-style buildings, a pirate-themed waterpark and a kids club with supervised activities. The property attracts plenty of divers too – it is located on Playa San Francisco, one of Cozumel’s best beaches, and a short boat ride away from Palancar Reef, one of the world’s leading dive destinations.

“These are truly fun and affordable properties that really deliver value,” says Rick McCauley, Barceló’s Senior Director Sales & Marketing & MICE Canada. “We’ve invested about $9 million in these properties since the acquisition, and they really shine.“

Occidental – Easy Living Hotels

After acquiring the Occidental brand in 2015, Barceló evaluated the properties and committed $130 million to renovations and enhancements. The result is a much-improved product at properties including Transat top-sellers Occidental at Xcaret Destination and Occidental Punta Cana.

“They were a little tired, but we’ve corrected that,” says McCauley. “We brought in our food and beverage philosophy offering more quality and choice, and we made many improvements. The money was very well spent.”

The two properties mentioned above come with Transat-exclusive Preference Club perks including direct round-trip transfers, WiFi access, preferential dedicated room locations, concierge service and spa discounts.

For clients seeking an extra touch of class, Royal Level upgrades are available at Occidental properties. Open Jaw had the pleasure of experiencing Royal Level at Occidental at Xcaret Destination, and it was truly a transformative experience, with perks including a private pool, private beach area and a private restaurant, where staff went above and beyond to ensure guest satisfaction.

Royal Level inclusions vary by property, but mainstays include free WiFi in rooms, nightly turn-down service, private pool and beach area and access to exclusive Royal Level facilities.

Occidenatl Costa Cancun

New to Transat this winter are the Occidental Tucancun and Occidental Costa Cancun, former Barceló properties now positioned in the Occidental brand.

One more note on the Occidental brand: three Occidental properties are part of the Transat Solo Collection, which means single traveller pay no supplement and enjoy perks like a weekly happy hour, communal table for sharing meals, free room service and free WiFi.

“Satisfying the needs of solo travellers can be challenging at times,” says Transat Commercial Director Nicole Bursey. “The Occidental Papagayo in Costa Rica, the Occidental Caribe and Occidental Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic do a great job of making single travellers feel welcome.”
