Dreaming Of Family Fun

California is the ultimate family playground, where everyone can be a kid

When you think about family travel in California, theme parks never fail to jump to mind… but there is so much more to family travel in the Golden State, from hiking, biking and kayaking to kid-focused cooking classes and special programming in museums and galleries.

“It's no secret that California is the ultimate family playground, where kids can be kids -- and adults can be too,” explained Pamela Pereira, travel trade manager at Visit California Canada. “So Visit California has renamed the state ‘Kidifornia’ as part of an integrated platform to promote family travel to the state.”

Yes, there’s no denying that there’s plenty to keep your clients’ kids happy at Disneyland, Universal Studios, Knott’s Berry Farm, Legoland and Six Flags Magic Mountain, but there are also miles of glorious beaches to explore in San Diego, a hockey team to cheer on in Anaheim, and hundreds of fire pits to toast marshmallows at on Huntington Beach -- so it’s well worth thinking outside the theme park box when you’re talking to your clients about California.

Then there are family road trips to consider. That famously laid-back Californian attitude is all about enjoying the journey, not just the destination, and the state is currently rebranding itself as the ‘Road Trip Republic’ -- with good reason. There are more than 50 road trips from major gateway cites to enjoy, from Wine Country adventures to culinary experiences and jaunts down the legendary Route 66.

“With California’s miles of epic road trip routes, families don’t need to pick just one destination when visiting the state,” added Pereira. “Agents should take time to familiarize themselves with the many experiences for families in California outside of the main gateway cities and of course with our endless opportunities for fun.”

“Offering family-friendly tours like the Movie Stars’ Homes Tour out of LA is a good way to close a sale with family travellers,” said Barbara Mengue Mbo, Account Manager of Partnerships at ACV. “They’ll see over 40 mansions on this two-hour tour through Los Angeles and Beverly Hills in a van and it goes where the other tours can't go.”
