It really is no big surprise that some 1.7 million Canadians flocked to the Golden State last year. After all, California is a multi-city destination where all your clients’ dreams are welcome.

Canadians tend to stay an average of 10.5 nights on a California trip and spend a whopping $2.26 billion collectively, making it an amazingly lucrative market that travel agents can’t afford to ignore. In this article we take a look at the state’s unique laid-back luxury offering and give you some hot tips on how to close a luxury sale.

When it comes to luxurious getaways, California does things a little differently. In the Golden State luxury travel isn’t a stuffy, starchy experience -- it’s a little more laid-back than that. ‘Luxury’ in California is all about those once-in-a-lifetime experiences that make your clients feel they are somewhere truly remarkable. It’s more about spending a night under the stars in Joshua Tree than sleeping in a five-star hotel. That’s just how things roll in California.

“Like all things Californian, the Golden State’s philosophy on luxury is guided by an adventurous spirit, a playful approach to life, and a love of the original, the unique and the innovative,” explained Pamela Pereira, travel trade manager at Visit California Canada.

“With a singular roster of upscale travel experiences, California’s luxury brand is unburdened by stuffy or staid traditions. Visit California embraces a relaxed approach to luxury that is free of pretense, but full of passion.”

This relaxed approach encapsulates everything from amazing outdoor concerts and private desert tours in the Greater Palm Springs area, to world class surfing and skiing experiences in the Greater LA area.

“When qualifying a luxury client, we suggest asking open-ended questions that go beyond the norms of budget and destination, so advisors can understand the kind of luxury experience the client is looking for,” added Pereira.

“California is home to many five-star hotel experiences and Michelin-star restaurants, but it is also home to experiences like horseback riding through vineyards or hot air ballooning. This laid-back luxury style is what California is known for and it’s what keeps bringing visitors back time and time again.”

There are many ways that Air Canada Vacations can add a little luxury to your client’s experience, such as private wine tours out of San Francisco or coastal tours out of San Diego.

“Your clients can experience the wines of Napa or Sonoma Valley on a six-hour private tour of the California Wine Country out of San Francisco,” said Barbara Mengue Mbo, Account Manager of Partnerships at ACV. “They get to treat themselves to a personalized day trip and sample delicious wines while immersing themselves in the lap of luxury.”

Alternatively, check out ACV’s nine-hour Grand Baja Private Coastal Tour: “Add a little Mexican spice to their visit to California with views of the craggy coastline as they travel south and cross the Mexican border. They’ll take a tour of Tijuana’s landmarks before dining on deep-fried lobster and a margarita in Puerto Nuevo and exploring the historic waterfront city of Rosarito Beach.”
