Why Six Couples Who Met At Sandos Return Every Year

The Playa del Carmen resort -- which has seen a 40% increase in its Canadian sales over the last year -- has a knack for attracting repeat business. In fact, one group of six couples from Canada and the U.S. who met for the first time while on vacation at the resort, have since spent seven vacations together at Sandos Playacar.

So what’s Sandos’ big secret? We asked Heidi Verschaeve, director of business development for the hotelier that operates nine properties, four in Mexico and five in Spain. 

“It’s about the spaces we’ve created,” she enthused. “There are special spaces on resort for everyone, from kids’ corners to romantic environments for couples and private spaces for guests who want to relax and enjoy the local flora and fauna. 

“We’ve taken into account that everyone needs their own space, but that they also like to come together as a family or group, so there are also many opportunities to interact.”

Fostering friendship is a strategy that’s at the very heart of the organization, from the friendliness of the food and beverage staff to the property’s relationship with Canadian travel professionals.

“We have a very stable team, which means that our repeat guests see friendly faces at the front desk or in the restaurant. Don’t ask me how they do it, but the staff remember the guests’ names and specific drink requests! So it’s a lot like coming home for a guest. 

“We also like to acknowledge every single repeat guest from the moment they return. Most of our reservations come from travel agents, so we like to send the returning guest a welcome amenity or personalized note from their agent.

“The Canadian agents are very loyal to us and they know we have an amazing sales team in Canada who will work with them on any booking or request that needs special attention. So if you need any help on closing a sale, contact your sales team. There’s probably something that we can do to help you close the deal.” 

It’s this exceptional level of support, along with the fact that the resort is continually innovating to surprise and delight its repeat guests, that makes booking groups to Sandos Playacar a no-brainer. The company’s year-round group incentives are just the icing on the cake for Canadian agents.

“For summer travel we offer the eighth adult free,” added Verschaeve, “And for winter travel we offer the 11th adult free. 

“Travel agents really shouldn’t be scared off by the ‘groups’ name, because we’re not talking about booking 100 people here -- eight people can be just a family travelling together. These special group offers are very competitive and they really help agents to close a sale.”
