All Hands On Deck

And hands-on ashore too – U by Uniworld is all about choices

Each day on U, guests will have the option to explore in one of three ways -- included excursions and activities, optional U Time outings or a self-guided tour of Europe’s famed riverside cities.

Onshore experiences are designed for those with a passion for exploration and a taste for authenticity, allowing ample time to meet locals, discover restaurants and bars in each city and enjoy both independent discovery and guided excursions.

Complimentary tours range from an evening bike ride along the Danube (or a daytime bike ride in Frankfurt with matte black-painted U bikes available for guest use) to a “Midnight in Paris” evening stroll, a canal cruise in Amsterdam, a treasure hunt at the Louvre, vineyard hikes and castle visits.

Curated optional U Time programming is tailored to distinct travel personalities, including foodies, culture buffs, adventure seekers, explorers, solo travellers, romantics, and night owls, with itineraries to satisfy individual passions.

Some examples:

  • Foodies will salivate over local market shopping with the ship’s chef in Rouen.
  • Culture buffs will delight in a guided bike tour of top World War II sites in Nuremberg.
  • Adventurers can rock climb at 6,500 ft. or get some white-water rafting thrills.
  • Explorers can kayak through UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
  • Solo travellers will love creating a custom drink to their tastes after meeting a Master Distiller at the world’s largest hands-on cocktail exhibit in Amsterdam.

“Most of our guests will enjoy a late breakfast then head out for the day,” says Michelle Palma, U by Uniworld’s VP Sales, North America. “We won’t offer standard city tours, instead providing culturally immersive, experiential choices. Or we’ll just give them transport and let them explore on their own. Our market doesn’t want to do large group travel.”

That’s why lunch is not included on U, because the vast majority of passengers will be off exploring. They’ll return for a drink and dinner, then many will head off again to experience local nightlife.

Mixology class

When night falls, “U Hosts” will be on hand to bring guests to the local hotspots and hidden gems in each city. For those who desire, there will be DJs onboard both ships as well as other nighttime entertainment for fun.

For U by Uniworld’s Palma, there’s great excitement in “introducing a brand-new concept” to the travel industry, and a great opportunity for agents to engage and begin an ongoing relationship with new young clients.

“We’re finally starting to see an influx of younger agents to the industry. This will be a real spark for them to offer something relevant and fabulous to their peers,” says Palma.

“U by Uniworld is hot, fresh and new. We’re quite sure there will be imitators, but with the vast experience we bring from both Uniworld and Contiki, and a beautifully designed ship and onboard and ashore program, we’re well positioned for success. And we want all of our agent partners to come along for the ride.”

Palma reiterates the value of promoting U by Uniworld to past guests of Uniworld and The Travel Corporation’s premium guided vacations brands Insight and Trafalgar.

“These are the people who know the amazing value and rich travel experience we offer. I was recently speaking with Susan Bowman, VP Marketing and Industry Relations for Transat. She has sailed several times with Uniworld, and she looks at U by Uniworld as a safe, fun environment that will deliver a truly high quality experience.

“That’s exactly what we will deliver. And by all indications, it’s going to be a great success.”
